No other turf pest receives more incorrect blame than grubs – many people accuse grubs for everything from winter kill to dog damage.
While there are over 30 different types of grubs, their cycle is very distinct – they only cause damage during August and September. Grubs will damage all types of turf grasses, but they have a definite preference to Bluegrass. Bluegrass mono-culture cities in the northern parts of the United States have much higher population levels of grubs creating a more severe threat. The mixture of both cool and warm season grasses in South Central Kansas causes lower population levels of grubs.
If you take a bulldozer or back hoe and remove any lawn across the United States, you will find grubs. Their presence in your lawn or landscape does not mean you have a grub problem, or need a grub treatment. The threshold for treatments is 25 to 35 grubs per sq. ft. – see photo.
CustomWise offers Grub treatments for those lawns that develop a grub problem. Correct diagnosis is very important – part of the CustomWise service is to assist you in making the correct identification of what is going on with your lawn. Applying a grub treatment when not necessary may do more harm than good – to our environment, your lawn or pocketbook.
